Directory of Traditional Hymns
Here is a list of popular traditional hymns. Each one has (will have) a link which will take you to more information, the music, and recordings etc. What is a 'Traditional Hymn'? This is a nearly impossible question to answer! As time moves on, so the 'modern', contemporary worship songs become 'traditional'. So as far as this mission is concerned and for the purposes of compiling this directory, traditional means: those hymns which have been popular over a sustained period of time, which have made a significant, lasting impact on the Christian music landscape, and were composed before the 1970's. A hymn that is or has been popular in a certain place or epoch is not necessarliy included. It would be easy to list one's favourite hymns like this. More powerful, I feel, to list those that have made a sustained, and significant contribution.Traditional hymns have been sung in worship from the following books: Methodist Hymn Book (pub. 1933) Hymns and psalms (methodist), Hymns Ancient & Modern (anglican), Congregational Hymns, Church of Scotland Hymnal, Scottish Psalter, Presbyterian Hymnal and of course, other hymn books.

This page is being worked on at the moment. Sorry that not all the information is here yet.

Some of these hymns are subject to copyright, details may be looked up in any of the Hymn books which carry them

At thy feet O Christ, we lay
Author of faith, eternal Word
Author of life divine
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed
Away with gloom, away with doubt
Away with our fears! The glad morning appears

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Begin, my tongue, some heavenly theme
Begone, unbelief; my Saviour is near
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine
Blessed city, heavenly salem
Blest are the pure in heart
Born in song
Born in the night, Mary's child
Brightest & best of the sons of the morning
By Christ redeemed, in Christ restored.

Captain of Israel's host, and guide
Children of Jerusalem
Christ above all glory seated
Christ be my leader by night as by day
Christ, from whom all blessings flow
Christ is alive! Let Christians sing
(Christ is made the sure foundation)
Christ is the world's redeemer
Christ is the world's true light
Christ the Lord is risen today
Christ whose glory fills the skies
Come all who look to Christ today
Come and join the celebration
Come, Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Come, Hloy Ghost our hearts inspire
Come Holy Ghost our souls inspire
Come Holy Ghost thine influence shed
Come let us join our cheerful songs
Come thou long expected Jesus
Come ye faithful, raise the anthem
Crown him with many crowns

Day by day dear Lord
Dear Lord and Father of mankind

Earth rejoice, our Lord is King
Eternal Father, strong to save

Father God in heaven
Father, hear the prayer we offer
Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Fierce raged the tempest  o'er the deep
Fight the good fight with all thy might
For all the saints, who from their labours rest
For the beauty of the earth
For the healing of the nations
For your Holy Book we thank you
Forth in thy name, O Lord, I go
Forty days and forty nights
From all who dwell below the skies
From east to west, from shore to shore
From heaven above to earth I come
From thee all skill and science flow

(Gentle Jesus, meek and mild)
(Give heed, my heart, lift up thine eyes)
Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising
Give me the faith which can remove
Give me the wings of faith to rise
Give to me, Lord, a thankful heart
Glorious things of thee are spoken
Glory and praise to God
Glory be to God on high
Glory to God in the highest
Glory to thee, my God, this night
(Go tell eveyone)
Go, tell it on the mountain
God be in my head
God has spoken - by his prophets
God is here! As we his people
God is in his temple
God is love, and where true love is, God himself is
God is Love: His the care
God is Love: let heaven adore him
God is workinh his purpose out as year succeeds to year
God moves in a mysterious way
God of all power, and truth, and grace
God of all - redeeming grace
God of almighty love
God of grace and God of glory
God of my salvation hear
God rest you, merry gentlemen
God's spirit is in my heart
God that madest earth and heaven
(Good Christian men, rejoice and sing)

Gracious spirit, dwell with me
Gracious spirit Holy Ghost
Great God of wonders! All thy ways
Great God we sing that mighty hand
Great is our redeeming Lord
Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father
Great shepherd of thy people hear
Guide me O thou great Jehovah

Hail! Holy Holy Holy Lord
Hail the day that sees Him rise
Hail thou once despised Jesus
Hail to the Lord who comes
Hail to the Lord's anonitned
Happy the souls to Jesus joined
Hark, my soul! It is the Lord
Hark the glad sound! The saviour comes
Hark! The herald Angels sing
He is Lord, He is Lord
Head of the church, our risen Lord
Head of thy church triumphant
Head of they church, whose spirit fills
Heavenly Father may your blessing
Help us O Lord to learn
Here, Lord, we take the broken bread
He's got the whole world in his hand
Hills of the north rejoice
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty
Holy Spirt ever dwelling
Holy Spirit, hear us
Holy spirit, truth divine
How blest is life if lived for thee
(How can a sinner know)
How good Lord to be here
How happy are thy servants Lord
How shall I sing that majesty
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
Hushed was the evening hymn

I am not skilled to understand
I am the bread of life
I come with Joy to meet my Lord
I heard the voice of Jesus say
I hunger and I thirst
I know that my redeemer Lives, And ever prays
I know that my redeemer lives - What joy
I lift up mine eyes to the hills
I need thee every hour
I sing the almighty power of God
I want the Spirit of power within
I'll praise my maker while I've breath
I'm not ashamed to own my Lord
Immortal, invisible, God only wise
In Christ there is no east and west
In heavenly love abiding
In the bleak mid-winter
In the cross of Christ I glory
(In the name of Jesus)
In the power of God's own spirit
It came upon the midnight clear
It is God who holds the nations
It passeth knowledge, that dear love of thine

Jesus calls us! O'er the tumult
Jesus comes with all his grace
Jesus, friend of little children
Jesus good above all other
Jesus hands were kind hands, doing good to all
Jesus has died that I might live
Jesus, if still the same thou art
Jesus in the olive grove
Jesus invites his saints
Jesus is Lord! Creations voice proc;laims it
Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love
Jesus, Lord, Redeemer
Jesus, Lord, we look to thee
Jesus, Lord, we pray
Jesus Lover of my soul
Jesus my Lord, how rich thy grace
Jesus, my strength, my hope
Jesus, my Truth, my Way
Jesu, priceless treasure
Jesus, saviour ever mild
Jesus shall reign where'er the sun
Jesus stand among us
Jesus, sun and shield thou art
Jesus the conquerer reigns
Jesus, the first and last
Jesus, the gift divine I know
Jesus the good shepherd is
Jesus the Lord said: "I am the bread"
Jesus - the name high over all
Jesus, the very thought of thee
Jesus, the word bestow
Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts
Jesus, the soul of all our joys
Jesus, thy blood and righteousness
Jesus, thy boundless love to me
Jesus, thy far extended fame
Jesus, thy wandering sheep behold
Jesus, to your table led
Jesus, united by thy grace
Jesus, we follow thee
Jesus, we look to thee
Jesus, we thus obey
Jesus, where'er thy people meet
Join all the glorious names
Joy to the world, the Lord is come
Judge eternal, throned in splendour
Just as I am without one plea

King of Glory, King of peace
Kum ba ya, my Lord

(Lamb of God, I look to thee)
Lamb of God, whose dying love
Lead, kindly light
Lead us heavenly father lead us
(Leave God to order all thy ways)
Let all the world in every corner sing
Let heaven and earth agree
Let earth and heaven combine
Let every Christian pray
Let him to whom we now belong
Let us break bread together
Let us with a gladsome mind
Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim
Lift up your heads , ye gates of brass
Lift up your heads, you mighty gates
Lift up your hearts to things above
'Lift up your hearts!' We lift them Lord to thee
Lo, God is here, let us adore
Lo, he comes with clouds descending
Long ago prophets knew
Look ye saints, the sight is glorious
Lord, as I wake I turn to you
Lord, bring the day to pass
Lord Christ, we praise your sacrifice
Lord Christ who on thy heart did'st bear
Lord, dismiss us with thy blessing
Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour
Lord, give us your spirit
Lord God, by whom all change is wrought
Lord God, in whom all worlds
Lord God the Holy Ghost
Lord God, your love has called us here
Lord, hear our prayer for this new year (day)
Lord, here is one to be baptised
Lord, I believe a rest remains
Lord, if at thy command
Lord, in the strength of grace
Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us
Lord Jesus, in the days of old
Lord Jesus, once a child
Lord, let your grace descend on those
Lord of all being, throned afar
Lord of all good, our gifts we bring to thee
Lord of all hopefulness, lord of all joy
Lord of creation, to you be all praise
Lord of light, whose name shines brighter
Lord of our highest love
Lord of the boundless curves of space
Lord, speak to me that I may speak
Lord, teach us how to pray aright
Lord, thy church on earth is seeking
Lord, thy word abideth
Lord, we believe to us and ours
Love came down at Christmas time
Love divine all loves excelling
Loving Jesus, gentle Lamb
Low in the Grave he lay

Make me a captive Lord
Make me a channel of your peace
Man of sorrows! What a name
May the Mind of Christ my saviour
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
Morning has broken
' Moses I know you're the man'
My faith it is an oaken staff
My faith looks up to thee
My God accept my heart this day
My God, how wonderful thou art
My God, I am thine
My God! I know, I feel thee mine
My God, I love thee - not because
My God, I thank thee, who hast made
My gracious Lord, I own thy right
My heart and voice I raise
My heart is full of Christ, and longs
My saviour, how shall I proclaim
My song is love unknown

Nearer, my God, to thee
New every morning is the love
New songs of celebration render
None other lamb, none other name
Not far beyond the sea nor high
(Now all the woods are sleeping)
Now in the name of him who sent him
Now is eternal life
Now join we, to praise the creator
Now let us from this table rise
Now let us see thy beauty, Lord
Now thank we all our God
Now the green blade rises from the buried grain

O Bread to pilgrims given
O Breath of God, breathe on us now
O Breath of life, come sweeping through us
O Christ, the healer, we have come
O Christ the Lord , O Christ the King
O come, all ye faithful
O come and dwell in me
O come, and let us to the lord
O come, O come Immanuael
O crucified redeemer
O dearest Lord, thy sacred head
O Father, whose creating hand
O for a heart to praise my God
O for a thousand tongues to sing
O god, by whose almighty plan
O God in heaven, whose loving plan
O God, O Spirit, known to us
O God of Bethel, by whose hand
O God of earth and altar
O God of our forefathers, hear
O God our Father, who dost make us one
O God, our help in ages past
O God, thou art the Father
(O God, thou bottomless abyss)
O God, thy being who can sound
O God, what offering shal I give
O Heavenly King, look down from above
O Holy Spirit, Lord of Grace
O how blest the hour, Lord Jesus
O Jesus Christ, grow in me
O Jesus, I have promised
O Jesus, King most wonderful
O King enthroned on high
O lift us up, strong son of God
O little one sweet, O little one mild
O little town of Bethlehem
O Lord and master of us all
O Lord, enlarge our scanty thought
O Lord of heaven and earth and sea
O Lord of life, thy quickening voice
O love divine, what hast thou done
O love, how deep, how broad, how high
O love of God, how strong and true
O love that wilt not let me go
O loving Lord, who art for ever seeking
O Master, let me walk with thee
O praise God in his holiness
O praise him! O praise him
O sacred head, sore wounded
O send thy light forth and thy truth
O sons and daughters, let us sing
O spirit of the living God
O splendour of God's glory bright
O that mine eyes might closed be
O the bitter shame and sorrow
O thou not made with with hands
O thou who at thy Eucharist didst pray
O thou who camest from above
O thou who in this mysterious bread
O thou, whom once they flocked to hear
O what a gift! What a wonderful gift
O what shall I do my saviour to praise
O word of God incarnate
O worship the king, all glorious above
O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness
Of all the Spirit's gifts to me
Of the Father's love begotten
Oft in danger, oft in woe
Omnipotent, redeemer,Our ransomed souls adore thee
On all the earth thy spirit shower
On Christmas night all Christains sing
On Jordans bank the baptist's cry
On the eve of Christmas
Once in royal David's city
Once on a mountain-top
One more step
One there is above all others
One who is all unfit to count
Onward, Christian soldiers
Open, Lord, my inward ear
Our blest redeemer, ere he breathed
Our Father, by whose name
Our Father, whose creative love
Our Lord, his passion ended
Our Lord is risen from the dead
Out of the depths I cry to thee

Powerful in making us wise to salvation
Praise and thanksgiving
Praise God for the harvest of farm and field
Praise him, praise him, all his children
Praise him, praise him, praise him in the morning
Praise, my soul, the King of heaven
Praise, O praise our God and king
Praise the Lord, his glories show
Praise the Lord of heaven
Praise the Lord who reigns above
Praise the Lord with joyful cry
Praise the Lord! Ye heavens, adore him
Praise to God, almighty maker
Praise to the Holiest in the height
Praise to the living God
Praise to the Lord, the almighty
Praise ye the Lord! Tis good to raise
Praise ye the Lord, ye servants of the Lord
Pray for the church, afflicted and oppressed
Pray that Jerusalem may have
(Pray without ceasing, pray)

Reap me the earth as a harvest to God
Rejoice and be glad! The redeemer hath come
Rejoice, O people, in the mounting years
Rejoice, the Lord is King
Revive thy work, O Lord
Ride on, Jesus, all-victorious
Ride on, ride on in majesty
Rock of ages cleft for me
(Round the Lord in glory seated)

Saviour, again to thy dear name we raise
Saviour, and can it be
Saviour, blessed saviour
Saviour from sin, I wait to prove
See, amid the winters snow
See him lying on a bed of straw
See how the great flame aspires
See Israel's gentle shepherd stand
See, Jesus, thy disciples see
See where our great High Priest
Seek ye first the Kingdom of God
Servant of all, to toil for man
Shepherd divine, our wants relieve
Shine thou upon us, Lord
Shout it in the street
Show us your ways O Lord
Silent night, holy night
Sing a new song, sing a new song
Sing a new song to the Lord
Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle
Sing, my tongue, the saviour's glory
Sing praise to God who reigns above
Sing to Him in whom creation
Sing to the great Jehovah's praise
Sing to the Lord a joyful song
Sing to the Lord with joyful voice
Sing we the King who is coming to reighn
Sing we the song of those who stand
(Sisters and brothers are we as God's children)
Soldiers of Christ arise
Sometimes a light surprises
Son of God, if thy free grace
Son of the Lord most high
Songs of praise the angels sang
(souls of men, why will ye scatter)
Spirit divine attend our prayers
Spirit of faith come down
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart
Spirit of God within me
Spirit of the living God
Spirit of truth essential God
Spirit of wisdom, turn our eyes
Spread the table of the Lord
Stand, soldier of the cross
Stand up, and bless the Lord
Stand up! Stand up for Jesus
Stay, Master, stay upon this heavenly hill
(Still the night, holy night)
Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands
Stupendous height of heavenly love
Summer suns are glowing
Sun of my soul, thou saviour dear
Sweet is the work, my God, my King

Take my life and let it be
Talk with us, Lord, thyself reveal
Teach me, my God and King
Teach me, O Lord, thy holy way
Tell me the old, old, story
Tell me the stories of Jesus
Tell out my soul, the greatness of the Lord
Thanks be to God, whose church on earth
Thanks to God whose word has spoken
That mighty resurrected word
The Angel Gabriel from heaven came
The church of Christ, in every age
The church's one foundation
The day of resurrection
The day thou gavest, Lord has ended
The duteous day now closes
The first day of the week
The first noel the angel did say
The glory of our King was seen
The God of Abraham praise
The God of love my shepherd is
The God who sent the prophets
The grace of life is theirs
The great love of God
The head that was once crowned with thorns
The heavens declare thy glory, Lord
The Holly and the Ivy are dancing
The King of love my shepherd is
The kingdom of God is justice and joy
The law of Christ alone can make us free
The Lord ascendeth up on high
The Lord is King! Lift up thy voice
The Lord is my shepherd
The Lord Jehovah reigns
The Lord will come, and not be slow
The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want
The race that long in darkness pined
The right hand of God is writing in our land
The royal banners forward go
(The royal banner of our King)
The saviour died but rose again
The saviour, when to heaven he rose
The saviour's precious blood
The Son of God proclaim
The spacious firmament on high
The strife is o'er, the battle done
The vice of God goes out to all the world
Thee will I love, my God and King
Thee will I praise with all my heart
There is a book (who runs may read)
There is a green hill far away
There is a land of pure delight
There is no moment of my life
There's a light upon the mountains
There's a spirit in the air
There's a wideness in God's mercy
Thine arm, O Lord, in days of old
Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son
Think of a world without any flowers
This child from God above
This is the day that the Lord has made
This is the day, This is the day
This joyful Eastertide
This stone to thee in faith we lay
This, this is the God we adore
Thou art before me, Lord, thou art behind
Thou art the way: to thee alone
Thou did'st leave thy throne
The God of truth and love
Thou hidden love of God, whose height
Thou hidden source of calm repose
Thou Judge of quick and dead
Thou shepherd of Israel, and mine
Thou who dost rule on high
Thou whose almighty word
Through all the changing scenes of life
Through the night of doubt and sorrow
Thy ceaseless, unexhausted love
Thy faithfulness, Lord, each moment we find
Thy hand, O God, has guided
Thy kingdom come, O God
Thy love, O God, has all mankind created
Timeless love! We sing the story
(Tis good, Lord, to be here)
To God be the glory great things he has done
To the name of our salvation
To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise
To you before the end of day
Trotting, trotting through Jerusalem

Unto us a boy is born
Upon the day of pentecost
Upon thy table, Lord, we place

Victim divine, thy grace we claim

(Wake, awake, for night is flying)
Wake, O wake! With tidings thrilling
Walk in the light: so shalt thou know
We come unto our fathers' God
We do not know how to pray as we ought
We give immortal praise
We have a gospel to proclaim
We plough the fields and scatter
We praise, we worship thee, O God
We pray for peace
We sing the praise of him who died
We turn to you, O God of every nation
Were you there when they crucified my Lord
What a friend we have in Jesus
What Adam's disobedience cost
What does the Lord require
What is our calling's glorious hope
What shall I do my God to love, My loving
What shall I do my God, My Saviour
What shall I render to my God
What shall our greeting be
What shall we offer our good Lord
When all thy mercies, O my God
When Easter to the dark world came
When I survey the wondrous cross
When, in music, God is glorified
When Jesus came to Jordan
When Jesus the healer passed through Galilee
When morning gilds the skies
When my love to Christ grows weak
When our confidence is shaken
When we walk with the Lord
Where cross the crowded ways of life
Where shall my wondering soul begin
While shepherds watched their flocks by night
Who fathoms the eternal thought
Who is on the Lord's side
Who would true valour see
Will your anchor hold in the storms of life
Wise men, seeking Jesus
With gladness we worship, rejoice as we sing
With glorious clouds encompassed round
With joy we mediate the grace
With wonder, Lord, we see your works
Worship, and thanks, and blessing
Would Jesus have the sinner die

Ye Choirs of Jerusalem
Ye faithful souls who Jesus know
Ye gates, lift up your heads on high
Ye holy angels bright
Ye servants of God, your master proclaim
Ye servants of the Lord
Yes, God is good - in earth and sky
Your light, O God, was given to earth
Your will for us and others, Lord
Your words to me are life and health
